What advice do you have for brides when selecting a wedding dress?

As a follow-up to our last blog about selecting a perfect dress, we had the chance to sit down and chat with Malgorzata Wieteszka-Slocomb, Owner and Head Designer of Malgorzata Couture in Poway, CA.  Malgorzata has a special knack for designing and customizing beautiful evening and wedding gowns. She draws inspiration from her European sensitivities and design experience she gained over the years while designing in New York City’s fashion and theatre world.  Malgorzata really brings something new and special to the table; she is unique and full of life, just like her gowns.

What advice do you have for brides when selecting a wedding dress?

Most Brides start with looking through the magazines.  I think it is a very good way to familiarize yourself with what is available out there, and the magazines can help with learning about current styles as well as new trends in bridal wear of the season.

When you look through the pages, try to quickly identify your personal favorites.  Have fun, and be opinionated!  If you find yourself dwelling on the photo too long, move on!  Do not try to talk yourself into liking something.  Your choice should be natural and not forced.  Then, cut out the photos that appeal to you most and lay those in front of you (remember to keep the name of the designer and boutique attached to the photo!). Afterwards, organize them by style, color, etc.  You will notice that there are certain looks that appeal to you more than others.  Also, do not be worried that one or two looks do not seem to “go with” the rest of your choices!  If you love them, you love them, and that is what this is about – Love! Isn’t it?

The same goes for your bridal boutique visit.  Come prepared with your top magazine picks, but remain open-minded.  Most brides have strong likes and dislikes (and so they should!), however being open to the boutique’s staff’s suggestions and trying on a dress that you may not normally try on can free your inner ‘fashionista’ or your inner princess!  Your resulting choice may become that unforgettable look everyone will love and be talking about for years to come!  I speak from experience!  For my own wedding I was so sure of my choice of a sheath dress, and then I went to a sample sale tried on a huge tulle ball gown with ballerina lace strapless bodice!  I just put it on and unleashed my inner princess!  Who knew I even had it inside me?

When going to boutiques, do not let yourself get talked into buying a dress.  If you are not sure about it, you can always come back to buy it at a later time.  When you find your dress you will know it, you will love it, and you will want to dance in it!  There is no rush, though if the process gets too overwhelming, go to a designer or stylist who is not associated with a particular boutique to give you objective advice, and to help you narrow down your choices.  One of the most important things to remember is that the dress should not over power the bride, the bride comes FIRST, and the dress complements the bride.

If what you see in magazines and boutiques is not what you had envisioned for yourself, sit by the computer or call around to find a designer or a personal stylist.  The best choices are local, so you can easily arrange for fittings in your already busy schedule!  If you chose the custom design route, remember to give yourself enough time! The design and construction process of a custom gown may take few months!  Consult your wedding coordinator to ask for her/his recommendations.  Remember that coordinators are very knowledgeable in many areas, and they can easily connect you with the right person saving you time and money.

Stay tuned for more one on one with Malgorzata Wieteszka-Slocomb
